Franck Bouroullec was born in 1967 in Tours (France) into a family of well known designers. His parents were both secondary school teachers.
At the age of six, Franck's preferred mode of expression is already recognized to be through the stroke of pen or pencil; throughout his youth – whether at school, at home or with his friends - he is known as the boy who expresses himself through drawing.
At 19, on completion of his secondary school certificate, he enrolls at the l'ESAG (Higher School of Graphic Arts) in Paris. Two years later he successfully passes the highly competitive entrance examination of the prestigious Ecole des Gobelins (School of Visual Arts and Communication) in Paris, from which he graduates with a diploma in the Animated Films section.
Franck Bouroullec's professional life begins at the storyboard (MC Solar, Passi and Saya) and in animation (Astérix & Obélix, le Piaf). In 1989, he decides to orient his career towards the performing arts and, consequently, discovers the magic world of the stage, becoming a stage decorator.
As the Club Med's Head of Stage Decoration, Franck imagines, creates and carries out his first public artistic performance for a live audience: in less than five minutes, he paints, back to front, portraits of mythical beings on large format canvases (4m2) and in quick succession follows up with paintings of anonymous individuals from the audience.
From 2003 through 2006, Jamel Debbouze projects Bouroullec to the forefront of the stageworld by hiring him to assume responsibility for the opening of his show "100% Debbouze ». Together, they produce over 450 shows throughout the French-speaking world, selling over one million copies of a DVD of the performance. Without a doubt Franck marks his success as an artist-performer by making the world of painting understandable and accessible to audiences numbering in the thousands.
Once he has gained public recognition, he is invited to participate in some of the best known French television programs. Artists for whom he produces clips include: Akon & M.R, Marc Lavoine and Didier Barbelivien. He is also asked to lend his support to major philanthropical causes such as the French Football Team's campaign against racial discrimination, Smiling Children, Action Innocence, Little Dream Foundation, Make a Wish, the Lionel Perrier Foundation, the G4 Foundation, the Red Cross and the Gala Event in favor of the donation of human organs.
In 2005, while on tour with Jamel Debbouze, he meets the woman who is to become his wife and with whom he decides to work in partnership in the next stage of his professional life.
Frank's son Sam is born in 2006.
From then on, his reputation travels beyond the French national borders, and he commits to a season of participation in a weekly series of live television programs "Effeto Sabato" on Rai Uno.
He becomes the main actor of the internet ad campaign of the Mini Club Man.
In 2007, Frank is the signator of the t-shirts and merchandising of the Quick team. The following year he creates a limited edition t-shirt for Tommy Hilfiger.
He paints for promotional previews of films such as: "Love Actually", "La Môme", "Quantum of Solace" and "Das Parfum".
A number of international festivals have also had recourse to his services.
Franck Bouroullec is the featured «surprise» at Eva Longoria and Tony Parker's wedding as well as at S.A S. Prince Albert II of Monaco's 50th birthday celebration.
The artist-performer regularly travels to Dubai, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Kuweit and Saudi Arabia where he paints Muhammad Yunus (Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2006), Sheikh Maktoum and several of his ministers, as well as S.A.R. H. Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of Qatar, and his two sons. He was in attendance at the inaugural ceremony of Dubai's Burj khalifa, the world's highest tower, and in 2007 creates live paintings - on Al Jazeera, the Arabic-language news network - of the World Cup Squash finalists.
In surges of energy and apnea, Bouroullec paints backwards and often on several canvases at the same time. It is impossible to remain indifferent to his particular brand of ephemeral magic which never lasts longer than a few minutes.
The Prince of Bahreïn asks for him on board his yacht in Sardinia; Lord Linley of the British Royal family invites him to the renowned Skibo Château in Scotland; the Fleming family (James Bond) regularly includes him amongst its guests at the family's gala evenings.
But above all, Franck Bouroullec loves to rise to challenges, accepting missions such as: in Lausanne, in 2006, covering 30,000 eggs with the portrait of W.A. Mozart - the eggs on the ground, the artist in an airbound basket; decorating the world's biggest tiramisù with a chocolate powder portrait of Barack Obama; or painting a pair of skis at the summit of Mont Blanc in honor of World Free Ride Champion Guerlain Chicerit and his team.
In 2009 his portraits and performances serve as the foundation of the film "Liebling", shot in Zurich with comedian Marco Rima.
Marries Antonia Winter.
Meets J.L. Foucqueteau, world's number one contemporary collector of art dedicated to Coca-Cola.
In 2010, The Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta (USA) exhibits one of his works for an entire year; in 2011, the Museum exhibits two of his canvases on the occasion of Coca Cola's 125th anniversary celebration in Paris.
J.C. Camus Productions invites him to cover the opening of singer Christophe Mae's concerts in Paris-Bercy.
In 2010-11, he meets his biggest challenge ever in terms of dimensions: alone, he creates the model for a tribute to Charlie Chaplin and, with the support of two helpers, paints the tribute on a total surface of 1600m2 shared between two 43-meter towers in Vevey (Switzerland).
Other portraits painted «live» include those of: George Clooney, Sophia Loren, Roberto Benigni, Luciano Pavarotti, Roger Federer, Michael Schumacher, Zinédine Zidane, Beyoncé, Anna Hathaway, S.A.S. Mohamed VI, J.H.Sitruk, Chief Rabbi of France, Bob Sinclair, Lionel Messi, Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Monica Bellucci, Daniel Craig, Gad Elmaleh, Patrick Bruel and Sébastien Loeb.
Bouroullec's talent is also coveted by world renowned companies such as: Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Lancôme, Véolia, Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, BMW, Vacheron & Constantin, Airbus, de Dietrich, Peugeot, Renault, Opel, L'Oréal, Gauloise, Cartier, Avène, Laboratoires Abott, Hublot, Baume & Mercier, Tag Heuer, Technomarine, Audemars Piguet, Castorama, Novartis, Française des Jeux, C&A, Ballantines, Crédit Agricole, Piaget, Philip Morris, Eberhard, Veuve Cliquot, 20 minutes, Paris Première, M6, etc.
For over 20 years, Franck has been seeking, through the speed of a simple stroke of his paintbrush, to purify the subject of his paintings in his quest to touch upon their very essence.
Today, exposing his workshop creations to the public eye is in itself an achievement, a way of telling a story. At the same time Franck Bouroullec continues to explore other graphic and plastic (glass, metal) art forms to ensure that his association with a specific technique does not limit the workings of his imagination.
